The Sabbath Day - Saturday or Sunday ?

FOURTH COMMANDMENT

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. Exodus 20:8

For six days work may be done; but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest, a holy convocation. You shall not do any work; it is a sabbath to the Lord in all your dwellings. Leviticus 23:3

Six days you are to do your work, but on the seventh day you shall cease from labor in order that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female slave, as well as your stranger, may refresh themselves. Exodus 23:12

And by the seventh day God completed His work which He had done and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. Genesis 2:2

See, the Lord has given you the sabbath; therefore He gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain every man in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.
So the people rested on the seventh day. Exodus 16:29

You shall work six days, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during plowing time and harvest you shall rest. Exodus 34:21

And it was the preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.
Now the women who had come with Him out of Galilee followed after, and saw the tomb and how His body was laid.
And they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared. Luke 23:54 [They came to work on the first day] [The day after Sabbath]

You shall surely observe My sabbaths; for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.
Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people.
For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest, holy to the Lord; whoever does any work on the sabbath day shall surely be put to death. So the sons of Israel shall observe the sabbath, to celebrate the sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.
It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day He ceased from labor, and was refreshed.
And when He had finished speaking with him upon Mount Sinai, He gave Moses the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written by the finger of God. Exodus 31:13

Should I Keep the Sabbath Day ?

WHAT THE OLD TESTAMENT SAYS

COMMANDMENTS REPEATED

Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you.
Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you, so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.
And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by and outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day. Deuteronomy 5:12

If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot from doing your own pleasure on My holy day, And call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, And shall honor it, desisting from your own ways, From seeking your own pleasure, And speaking your own word, Then you will take delight in the Lord, And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, For the mouth of the Lord has spoken. Isaiah 58:13

But if you do not listen to Me to keep the sabbath day holy by not carrying a load and coming in through the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day, then I shall kindle a fire in its gates, and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem and not be quenched. Jeremiah 17:27

You shall keep My sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary; I am the Lord. Leviticus 26:2

Then Thou didst come down on Mount Sinai, And didst speak with them from heaven; Thou didst give to them just ordinances and true laws, Good statutes and commandments.
So Thou didst make known to them Thy holy sabbath, And didst lay down for them commandments, statutes, and law, Through Thy servant Moses. Nehemiah 9:13

In those days I saw in Judah some who were treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sacks of grain and loading them on donkeys, as well as wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, and they brought them into Jerusalem on the sabbath day. So I admonished them on the day they sold food.
Also men of Tyre wer living there who imported fish and all kinds of merchandise, and sold them to the sons of Judah on the sabbath, even in Jerusalem.
Then I reprimanded the nobles of Judah and said to them "What is this evil thing you are doing, by profaning the sabbath day?
Did not your fathers do the same so that our God brought on us, and on this city, all this trouble? Yet you are adding to the wrath on Israel by profaning the sabbath." Nehemiah 13:15

Now while the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the sabbath day.
 And those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation;
and they put him in custody because it had not been declared what should be done to him.
Then the Lord said to Moses, "The man shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp."
So all the congregation brought him outside the camp, and stoned him to death with stones, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. Numbers 15:32

And also I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands, because they rejected My ordinances, and as for My statutes, they did not walk in them; they even profaned My sabbaths, for their heart continually went after their idols. Ezekiel 20:15

And sanctify My sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God. Ezekiel 2:20

And I gave them My sabbaths to be a sign between Me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them. Ezekiel 20:12

 Also the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, To minister to Him, and to love the name of the Lord, To be His servants, every one who keeps from profaning the sabbath, And holds fast My covenant;
Even those I will bring to My hold mountain, And make them joyful in My house of prayer. Isaiah 56:6

Thus says the Lord, Preserve justice, and do righteousness, For my salivation is about to come And My righteousness to be revealed.
How blessed is the man who does this, And the son of man who takes hold of it; Who keeps from profaning the sabbath, And keeps his hand from doing any evil. Isaiah 56:1

WHAT THE NEW TESTAMENT SAYS

For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Romans 15:4

Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and so teaches others, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:19

The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Mark 2:27

WORSHIP

Think about the following two statements made by Jesus:

Upon this rock (principles) I will build My church (believers) Matthew 16:18

For where two or three have gathered together in My name, there I am in their midst. Matthew 18:20

As was His (Jesus) custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. Luke 4:16

And He (Jesus) was teaching them on the Sabbath. Luke 4:31

The Fourth Commandment commands us to keep the sabbath day which we are told is the seventh day of the week. We or our servants are not to work on the sabbath, (i.e. mow the lawn, wash the car, shopping, etc). Observing the sabbath day may include organized worship servies. The Bible indicates that teaching took place on the Sabbath.

WHEN DOES THE SABBATH DAY BEGIN

Note: According to the ancient Hebrew calendar, the day began in the evening. The sabbath was celebrated from Friday at sunset to Saturday at sunset.

From evening to evening you shall keep your sabbath. Leviticus 23:32

You shall sacrifice the Passover in the evening at sunset. Deuteronomy 16:6

And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. Genesis 1:6
